Range / Habitat

  • Occurs in the Western Atlantic off the coast of Florida, Bermuda and the Bahamas, through Caribbean, the Antilles and Lesser Antilles to South America.
  • Found in coral heads and columns, the bottom of caves and shaded reef areas at depths of 10 to 151 feet (3 - 46 m).

Physical Characteristics

  • Coloration is translucent with orange and gray lines running from eye to tail.
  • Eyes dark and large relative to body size.
  • Two pores between eyes.
  • Individual typically measures 1.6 inches (4.0 cm) in length. 
  • Mouth is terminal: near the tip of its pointed snout.

Diet / Feeding

  • Masked goby is omnivorous, eating both plant and animal matter. Diet primarily consists of algae and small zooplankton.

Conservation Status

  • “Not Evaluated” on the IUCN Red List.

Additional Information

  • Schools in large coral heads and columns.
  • This animal is considered to be “reef-safe” and will help to keep algae under control in home aquariums by picking at the algae that can cover corals.
