Range / Habitat

  • Occurs throughout Florida coastal waters, Bahamas, and the Carribbean.
  • Found on coral reefs, sometimes inside tube sponges, at depths of 3-90 feet (1-30 m).

Physical Characteristics

  • Peppermint shrimp reaches lengths of 1.75 inches (4.4 cm).
  • Body and legs are pale to translucent, lined all over with bright red or flame orange stripes.
  • Possesses the long, thin antennae characteristic of almost all shrimp.

Diet / Feeding

  • Peppermint shrimp is a scavenger and cleaner, feeding on debris and parasites from larger animals.

Conservation Status

  • “Not Evaluated” on the ICUN Red List.

Additional Information

  • Considered shy but easy-going, this species is a common choice for home salt water aquariums.
  • Larva will exist in a planktonic state for the first several molts.
