Range / Habitat

  • Occurs in the Indo-West Pacific from the Red Sea and South Africa to the small island nation of Niue in the Western South Pacific, north to Japan and south to Australia.
  • Found near coral reefs, lagoons at depths to 180 feet (55 m). 

Physical Characteristics

  • Coloration varies from one location to another; ranges from yellow-orange to a deep pinkish red with a brighter pink bar extending from the eye to the base of the pectoral fin. Dorsal, pectoral, pelvic and caudal fins may have darker coloration of orange-red to red-pink.
  • Maximum length of six inches (15 cm).

Diet / Feeding

  • Diet consists of zooplankton.

Reproduction / Growth

  • A protogynous hermaphrodite; female may change sex to replace males lost from a social group.
  • Male is territorial and forms harems. Male spawns nightly with females.

Conservation Status

  • “Not Evaluated” on the IUCN Red List.

Additional Information

  • Also known as the “lyretail anthias.”
  • Forms large aggregations.
