Range / Habitat

  • Occurs in freshwater habitats of Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.
  • Found in still water- often low swamps, marshlands and rice fields, as well as ditches and small pools. 

Physical Characteristics

  • Crescent betta is a small, slender fish with a pointed head. The mouth is terminal. 
  • Body coloration ranges from silvery-tan to blue or brown; the fins are wide and fan-like. The caudal fin displays a red crescent along the trailing edge, and may be streaked with blue.
  • The pectoral fins come to a significant downward point, and are usually red, tipped with white. 
  • Crescent betta can grow to 2.3 inches (6 cm) in length.

Diet / Feeding

  • Diet consists of insect larvae and other small invertebrates.

Reproduction / Growth

  • Crescent betta is a bubble nest building species. The male constructs a nest to protect eggs after spawning.

Conservation Status

  • “Least Concern” on the IUCN Red List.
