Range / Habitat

  • Occurs on the island of New Guinea, in the Mamberamo River in West Papua, Indonesia.
  • Found in tropical, swift-moving and clear freshwater rivers.
  • Extent of this species’ reach is unknown due to insufficient surveying of its area.

Physical Characteristics

  • Long body that deepens with age, large eyes and two dorsal fins.
  • Fins are bright: red on males and yellow on females. Body is a pink-gray while scales light in blue when reflecting light from the front.
  • Individual typically measures between 2 to 2.5 inches (5.1 – 6.4 cm) in length. 

Diet / Feeding

  • Diet consists of vegetation, insects, small worms and fish eggs.

Conservation Status

  • “Data Deficient” on the IUCN Red List.

Additional Information

  • Also known as the “praecox rainbowfish.”
  • A schooling fish: aggregates in female-male groups of ten or more in its natural habitat.
