Range / Habitat

  • Peacock gudgeon occurs in freshwater habitats of eastern Papua New Guinea.
  • Found near the bottom in rivers, ponds and rainforest streams.

Physical Characteristics

  • Body is long and pale, streaked vertically with red. Fins are transparent, edged in yellow and black. A black spot appears on the caudal peduncle.
  • Peacock gudgeon can grow to 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length.

Diet / Feeding

  • Diet consists of insects, worms and other small invertebrates.

Reproduction / Growth

  • The male is generally larger than the female, and during spawning periods will display brighter colors.
  • When in breeding condition, males form a small protrusion on their heads called a nuchal hump.

Conservation Status

  • “Not Evaluated” on the IUCN Red List. 

Additional Information

  • Sometimes incorrectly called the “peacock goby,” as the peacock gudgeon is not a true goby, but a member of Family Eleotridae. 
  • A schooling species.
