Range / Habitat

  • Occurs in the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea to the Line, Marquesan and Ryukyu Islands, southward through the Great Barrier Reef and the Mariana and Marshall Islands in Micronesia.
  • Found on hard bottoms in the shallow waters of exposed seaward reefs, exposed to strong currents at depths ranging from 7 to 102 feet (2-31 m). Common depth does not exceed 13 feet (4 m).

Physical Characteristics

  • Fusiform shape, with a pale yellow coloration. Dark blue-edge red-to-purple patch under the eye. Orange bar on pectoral fins bordered by a bright blue.
  • Individual may grow to 4.7 inches (12.0 cm) in length.  

Diet / Feeding

  • Like other dartfish species, the zebra goby mainly feeds on zooplankton in the water column as well as among the reef and substrate rubble.

Conservation Status

  • “Not Evaluated” on the IUCN Red List.

Additional Information

  • Also known as the “zebra dartfish.”
  • A schooling species, aggregating in small to large groups.
