Range / Habitat

  • Occurs in the Western Pacific from the Ryukyu Islands to Java and New Guinea. Also appears in areas of Micronesia.
  • Found in lagoons, sheltered bays and reefs at depths of about 3-46 feet (1-14 m).

Physical Characteristics

  • White with a yellow head, a broad darker midsection bar, and purple spots on the rear of its body that disappear or fade during the evening. 
  • Has distinctive tail fins, and brightly colored red eyes. 
  • Maximum length that has been found was 3.3 inches (8.5 cm).

Diet / Feeding

  • Diet consists of crustaceans.

Reproduction / Growth

  • Male pajama cardinalfish is a mouth brooder; he will hold fertilized eggs in his mouth to keep them safe and healthy until they are ready to hatch.

Conservation Status

Additional Information

  • Forms aggregations among the branches of various corals. 
  • Disperses at night to feed close to the bottom.
  • Common home aquarium fish and can be reared in human care.
