Range / Habitat

  • Occurs in the Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Line Islands. Does not occur in the Red Sea or the Arabian (Persian) Gulf.
  • Found primarily around coral reefs with a preference for coralline lagoons at depths of 16-164 feet (5-50 m).

Physical Characteristics

  • Coloration is a silvery blue with a yellow nape, back and tail. The rest of upper two-thirds of its body is bright blue, and the lower one-third is silvery white.
  • Common length of 10.5 inches (26.6 cm), maximum length of 15.7 inches (40 cm).

Diet / Feeding

  • Diet consists of zooplankton.

Reproduction / Growth

  • Migrates to select areas around the reef to spawn near the surface in the entrances of deep channels during outgoing tides on a lunar cycle.

Conservation Status

  • “Not Evaluated” on the IUCN Red List.

Additional Information

  • Forms schools with other species of fusiliers.
  • Other species of sometimes form large aggregations that tend to group into smaller schools and travel toward the reef to attend cleaning stations.
  • Also known as “blueback fusilier.”
