Range / Habitat

  • Occurs in the Western Pacific from the Ryukyu Islands in Japan south to Australia.
  • During the day, found in coral-rich areas of outer reef slopes and channels at depths from 1-115 feet (1-35 m). At night, it forages over shallow reef flats.

Physical Characteristics

  • Silvery white body with close-set oblique black bands. Median fins are yellow with black spots.
  • Lips are yellow. Red spot at the base of the pectoral fins.
  • Common length of about 19 inches (48 cm).

Diet / Feeding

  • Diet consists of fish, benthic crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates.

Conservation Status

  • “Not Evaluated” on the IUCN Red List.

Additional Information

  • Also known as the “diagnonal-banded sweetlips,” “Goldman’s sweetlips” or “lined sweetlips.”
  • Appears singly or in small schools.
