In 2008, Georgia Aquarium’s Staff and Volunteer                                                                                     Development Department created The Volunteer of the                                                                          Month Award in an effort to express appreciation for the invaluable contributions made by volunteers. As a result of their dedication, enthusiasm and talents, volunteers are nominated by the department in which they work. Recipients of this award receive a framed certificate, are featured in Georgia Aquarium publications and may park for a month in the Volunteer of the Month parking space, conveniently located on the first level of the parking deck. Ursula Kauffman - Volunteer of the Month for August 2008 

Ursula Kauffman has been volunteering since November 2005 when the Georgia Aquarium opened its doors. She has accrued over 500 hours, devoting most of this time to Guest Services and Guest Programs. Her expansive knowledge of both Atlanta and our Aquarium greatly benefits the guests, ensuring them an enjoyable, fulfilling visit.  She is able to speak German fluently and has assisted many international visitors. Ursula is also known among staff for her wit and energy in handling whatever comes her way, especially at the Information Desk. As one team member described, “Ursula has the ability to turn even the most negative situation around into a positive experience for the guests.”  For always going above and beyond, we are proud to recognize Ursula Kauffman as Augusts’ Volunteer of the Month!    

Roz Edelberg - Volunteer of the Month for June 2008

 Since before Georgia Aquarium opened to the public, Roz has been an invaluable asset, contributing over 1,300 service hours since September of 2005! She has integrated her talents and energy to serve in almost every available volunteer role. The level of leadership Roz brings to the Aquarium Ambassador Team and her amazing contribution as administrative assistant to the Development Department have been nothing short of inspiring. Even on a moment’s notice, she generously gives not only her expertise, but also her smile and positive attitude. She is a great example of what one person can accomplish if they have an enthusiastic spirit and a sincere desire to serve. Roz’s dedication, caring attitude and professionalism exemplify the best qualities of a volunteer and have influenced volunteers and staff members alike. We are truly fortunate to have her as a part of our Georgia Aquarium family. 

David Jacobson - Volunteer of the Month for May 2008

David has been “hooked” on the Georgia Aquarium since he became a volunteer in November 2005.  As a retired physician with some new free time, he was seeking an opportunity to promote conservation and education.  As of December 2007, David had given over 500 volunteer service hours and completed all of the training classes. He has generously offered his expertise and cooperative spirit by serving in several departments including Education, Guest Programs, Diving, Special Events and the Volunteer Sales Team. His warm smile and friendly, enthusiastic spirit have enhanced the Aquarium experience for many guests and staff members since he came on board more than two years ago. Although David is grateful to be able to contribute to the Aquarium, he feels that he has been greatly rewarded by the experience, as well.  “The staff is truly genuine and knowledgeable, and I have grown so fond of them. It really does start from the heart.”
