If you have ever wanted to know how the world's largest aquarium works, how much a whale shark eats or what
ocean fans like you are up to, then the Georgia Aquarium's Teen Volunteer Program is for you! 
 

The Deal

The Georgia Aquarium Teen Volunteer Program begins
in the summer and continues on weekends and school breaks throughout the school year.  This program is a yearly commitment.

During the summer, teens will assist Camp H20 for one full week (40 hours) and then assist in the following areas for a minimum of 100 hours (for a minimum total of 140 hours during the summer). During the school year, teens can expect to assist in the same areas on weekends and during sch
  • Aquarium Greeter positions
  • Mascot assistance
  • Birthday parties
  • Conservation Carts
  • Arts & Crafts assistance 
During the school year, teens can expect to assist in the following areas, mostly on weekends:
  • Aquarium Greeter positions
  • Mascot assistance
  • Birthday parties
  • Conservation Carts
  • Arts & Crafts assistance 
  • Camp H2O (during school breaks)

After 12 consecutive months of full participation and good performance, teens may continue in the program, having the to volunteer behind-the-scenes as a Biologist Assistant. Note: This program will start in the summer and continue through May. Teens are required to volunteer on a regular schedule of alternating Saturdays or Sundays for eight hours (TBD by availability and scheduling needs).   

The Details

How to Apply:
  • Applicants must be 16 or 17 years old by the start of the summer program. (Anyone 18 years & above is eligible to become an adult volunteer by applying online via the adult volunteer page. If you will be turning 18 in the summer, please wait and apply as an adult volunteer.)
  • Teens that start in the Teen Volunteer Program and turn 18 during the program must complete the 12-month commitment to the Teen Program prior to applying for the adult volunteer program.
  • Applications must be postmarked by April 15th. Applicants selected for an interview will be notified after April 25th. Please scroll to the bottom of the page to download an application.
  • Note: Due to the volume of applicants and the limited teen volunteer positions available, not all of those who apply will be contacted for an interview. 

 What Time is Required:

  • During the summer, teen volunteers are required to commit to volunteer for 1 full week of camp (40 hours) and volunteer a minimum of 100 hours additional during the summer. Camp is scheduled for June 14-June 25. I fyou are unavailable for a large majority of this tie, please do not apply. During the second summer, teen volunteers continuing on as a biologist assistant are required to commit to volunteering for a full day (8 hours) on a regular schedule of alternating Saturdays or Sundays.  
  • During the school year, teen volunteers are required to commit to 12 hours per month on Saturdays and during school breaks. Note: We do not offer one-time community court-appointed or school service opportunities.
  • In addition, teens must assist Winter and Spring Camp H2O, the Georgia Aquarium's children’s camp, for at least two full days during school breaks, and attend training as needed during both the first and second year of participation. (Camp dates and training times to be announced later.) 

What We Expect - Teens Must:

  • Confirm and secure all necessary means of transportation before applying.
  • Be able to volunteer at the Georgia Aquarium for a one-year time period.
  • Provide a copy of their birth certificate to verify their age at interview.
  • Provide current government or school-issued photo ID.
  • Pay a $60 Volunteer Membership Fee by start of program.
  • Attend an Information Session with a parent in attendance on May 22.  
  • Be available for and attend two days of training at the Georgia Aquarium - June 5-6. 
  • Report on time for all training and volunteer positions in proper attire.
  • Provide all Aquarium guests, staff and volunteers with respect, accurate information, and assistance within the Aquarium guidelines.
  • Maintain a strong work ethnic and positive attitude.
  • Demonstrate care & concern for wildlife and support for Aquarium’s mission.
  • Abide by Aquarium policies, procedures and code of conduct as set forth by the Georgia Aquarium Volunteer Program.

    NOTE: We cannot accommodate requests to assist with teens’ school projects.

Upon successful completion of the teen volunteer program & return of their Aquarium ID, teens will receive 5 daily tickets for every 100 hours they contribute to the program so they may return with friends and family to the Georgia Aquarium. (Up to a maximum of 25 tickets.)
