Georgia Aquarium E-Newsletter

A Letter from our Executive Director

Dear Aquarium Friends,

Thank you for your tremendous support! In this e-newsletter, we have many positive changes and exciting events to share.

We have made improvements to make your visiting experience more enjoyable in our Visitor Tips and Updates section. Check out our exciting new partnerships with Coastal America and Seafood Watch. Also, make sure to mark your calendar for an extravagant brunch your mom will never forget. Georgia Aquarium is hosting its inaugural Mother’s Day Brunch on May 14th.

Our guests have told us that the beluga whales are among their favorite exhibit at the aquarium. You may have noticed that Gasper, one of our star belugas, has been on and off exhibit recently. Gasper came to us with existing health issues, when we rescued him from a Mexico City amusement park. His body had numerous lesions, and he was grossly underweight. Through a high calorie diet, we are pleased to say Gasper has gained nearly 200 pounds. Aquarium husbandry and veterinary staff believe the stress of the living environment in Mexico caused Gasper's immune system to become compromised. Until his underlying condition is diagnosed and treated, Gasper’s condition will remain guarded. He will be moved on and off of exhibit as the Georgia Aquarium veterinarian staff continues to monitor his health. We will update the website with any new information on Gasper's health. Our 4R Program supports our veterinarian activities and rehabilitation programs.

Thank you for your continued support. You are the foundation of our success and what makes Georgia Aquarium the world’s most engaging aquarium experience!

Sincerely,

Jeffery S. Swanagan

Executive Director

Summer Day Camps

Summer Day Camps

Kids…this announcement is just for you! Georgia Aquarium is happy to announce that summer day camps will be from June 5 – August 11, 2006. Camp H2O is a week long day camp experience for children between the ages of 4 and 14 years old.

This program will provide campers with a unique experience at the Georgia Aquarium that will involve animal encounters, behind-the-scenes tours, opportunities to meet the husbandry team and much more. The program will have two alternating weekly themes, Conservation Crusaders and Aquanaut Adventurers, so participants can enjoy one or two week sessions. This is a great opportunity for kids to explore the aquatic realm at the world's largest Aquarium.

Creature Feature

Creature Feature

Creature Feature: Dylan, loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta)

Dylan, the older and larger of the two loggerhead sea turtles here at Georgia Aquarium, swims in Gray’s Reef exhibit of the Georgia Explorer gallery. A typical day for Dylan consists of swimming amongst ladyfish and red snappers while snacking on jumbo shrimp and playing with frozen treats.

Georgia Aquarium biologist Arlene Marquez has been working with Dylan since his arrival in November. Arlene administers daily feedings, provides enrichment tools and maintains the exhibit. Enrichment tools, or as we call them turtle toys, are used to stimulate and entertain Dylan. One example is a frozen tennis ball-like ring.

Here at Georgia Aquarium, Dylan’s diet consists of squid, capelin and herring. Dylan weighs 106 lbs. and measures 55.2 cm inches across and 67.5 cm in length. Loggerhead sea turtles are native to Georgia’s coast, but can also be found off the coast of Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina. Physical features of loggerheads include the carapace (top shell), plastron (bottom shell), and scutes (individual patches on the top shell). Loggerheads are typically red or yellowish brown in color, and their front flippers have two claws. These turtles have an oversized head and very strong jaws. They can reach 200 to 350 pounds, measure 3 feet in length and can live well over 100 years.

The Georgia Explorer gallery, presented by SunTrust Bank, is highly interactive, boasting five touch tanks full of horseshoe crabs, sea stars, stingrays and shrimp. In this gallery, you will see animals native to Georgia’s coastal waters. Dylan’s home - Gray’s Reef – is geared towards educating guests about the National Marine Sanctuary off Georgia’s coast.

Coastal Learning Center

Georgia Aquarium Chosen as Coastal Learning Center

We are proud to announce that on May 25th Georgia Aquarium will be dedicated as a Coastal Learning Center by Coastal America, a partnership committed to protecting, preserving and restoring America’s coastal heritage. Georgia Aquarium will be the first land-locked Aquarium designated as a Coastal Learning Center.

Thanks to Coastal America’s partnership with federal agencies, we will have unique access to expert speakers, exhibit information, educational publications, teaching materials, field trip sites and scientific data from around the country. The network combines the resources of federal agencies with marine educational centers. This partnership is just one more way Georgia Aquarium is becoming a center for conservation. Visitor Tips & Updates

Visitor Tips & Updates

Thanks to our guests and staff for your support and feedback. We are always working to improve so we can be the world’s most engaging Aquarium experience. We have expanded our operating hours, so you can now visit us as early as 8am seven days a week. Another way we are working to reach this goal is by reducing the guest capacity in the building at any one time. We now admit 2,000 less guests in the building at once than we allowed previously. You are sure to notice a vast improvement in the space available next time you visit. Click to see our new extended hours and other visitor tips. We now offer the convenience of purchasing 4D Theater tickets and Behind the Scenes tours online. We have received rave reviews for Deepo’s 3D Undersea Wondershow. Book your tickets online when you make your reservations to secure your desired show time.
