Apply Now to be a Spring 2010 Intern!

Immerse yourself in the exciting career of Communications and PR at the world's largest aquarium! Gain valuable experience while promoting the fascinating animals and programs of the Georgia Aquarium.

 

Internship Responsibilities:

  • Research and write various press releases, newsletter articles and Web site content.
  • Assist in coordinating photo and film shoots, media interviews and site visits.
  • Coordinate promotional opportunities with the media and traffic prize package distribution.
  • Update Georgia Aquarium's Web site.
  • Attend and actively participate in all department and staff meetings, special events and industry meetings outside the department as assigned.
  • Assist in other daily projects as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Junior/senior status with major coursework toward a degree in marketing, communications, public relations or advertising, plus excellent written and oral communications skills and strong computer skills.
  • Internship requires a regular schedule of more than 25 hours per week.
  • This is a non-paid internship.

Meet Our Current Interns

 

Shannon Lynch - Fall 2009 Intern
Shannon graduated from the University of Alabama in August 2009 with a degree in Public Relations and a minor in English. Shannon's favorite part of working at the Georgia Aquarium has been working with all forms of media, including Disney, BET and Vh1. Her favorite animal at the Aquarium is the blackbar triggerfish with it's brightly colored markings.

 

Meghan Smith - Fall 2009 Intern
Meghan graduated from Georgia Southern University in August 2009 with a degree in Public Relations.  Before her internship at the Georgia Aquarium, she was an intern at 360 Media, Inc.  Meghan's favorite part about working at the Georgia Aquarium is getting up close to the animals, working with media and being in a fun environment every day. 

  

Where Are They Now?

Kristin Correa – Summer 2006 Intern
Currently, Kristin is the marketing & communications coordinator for Preparis, Inc., offering preparedness services for leading law firms. While at the Aquarium, Kristin loved being involved in public relations on a national and international level. Kristin says the Aquarium has definitely impressed all potential employers during job searches.
Jacob Hawkins - Summer 2006 Intern
Jacob is an account executive at Ogilvy Public Relations. While at the Aquarium, he enjoyed working on a Tyler Perry movie, a celebrity roast and multiple new animal arrivals (including a whale shark). At Ogilvy, Jacob’s previous Aquarium experience helps him relate to potential clients and bring in new business.
Michaelanne Dye - Summer 2006 Intern
Michaelanne is a graduate student at Georgia State University.  Before returning to school, she worked as the e-communications & new media specialist at the Aquarium and worked in PR at GCI Group. During her internship, Michaelanne enjoyed doing all media stories related to animals and getting up close with aquatic life.
Austin Rhodes - Summer 2006 Intern
Austin is a merchandiser for Anheuser-Busch and prior to that, he did marketing for the Atlanta Braves. Austin loved behind-the-scenes animal encounters and interacting with national media. Austin says, “This internship equipped me with a "learn on the fly" mindset while opening my imagination to unimaginable things; everyday was a new adventure!”

Shawna Carpenter - Fall 2006 Intern                                                                   Shawna is an event coordinator for Marriott International and is working on her MBA from Clayton State. During her internship, she enjoyed learning about the numerous animals and helping to organize the 3 millionth guest celebration! This internship helped paved the way for a future in public relations and communications.

Leigh Tenewitz - Spring 2007 Intern
Leigh is currently working towards a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management at the UGA. While at the Aquairum, Leigh's love for the nonprofit industry was affirmed through seeing the tremendous impact of one organization on numerous individuals. Overall, Leigh loved being a part of a fun, dedicated and caring staff while at the Aquarium.
Amanda Latson - Summer 2007 Intern
Amanda is the PR Coordinator for the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau. At the Aquarium, she loved working with the Discovery Channel and receiving extensive media relations experience. Amanda says, “this is not a “busy- work” internship; you do tasks that help you in the future. Not many people can step out of their office into the world's largest Aquarium!”
Mackenzie Whalen - Fall 2007 Intern
Mackenzie currently serves as the public relations coordinator at the Aquarium. Prior to joining the PR team, Mackenzie received a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Georgia Southern University. After graduation, she accepted a public relations traineeship with the Atlanta Braves. Mackenzie loves promoting the beautiful animals at the Aquarium.
Brittany Calhoon - Spring 2008 Intern
Brittany is a media buyer for mediaedge in New York City and works with IKEA, Channel, Wrangler Jeans and more. Her favorite part of working at the Aquarium was the knowledgeable people she worked with and the positive work environment. Overall, she loved working with the TODAY Show and learning about the many stages of planning a live show.
Mallory Perkins - Summer 2008 Intern
Mallory is the e-communications and new media specialist at the Aquarium.  She graduated with a BA in Public Relations at UGA and was an account manager at Concept Hub, Inc., a social media agency.  Mallory's Aquarium highlights include: sending a sea turtle back to sea, creating a YouTube music video and helping with a manta ray arrival!
Missy Dinos
Missy graduated from UGA Aug. 2008 with a journalism degree. Her past internships include the Atlantan Magazine, Sea Island Company and the Georgia Museum of Art. Missy’s favorite part of working at the Aquarium is working with media and spending time with all of the animals. Her favorite animal at the Aquarium is the weedy sea dragon.
Stekki Mazzo
Stekki graduated from UGA in May 2009 with a degree in Public Relations and is currently working for GolinHarris in New York City. Before working at the Aquarium, she had an internship in the health care department with Ruder Finn. Her favorite part about the working at the Aquarium is the hands-on opportunities as well as the numerous interactions with media.
