Come see the new alligator exhibit at the Georgia Aquarium!
The American alligator comes to the Georgia Aquarium as part of our newest exhibit in the River Scout gallery. Come see this ancient species today! Scientists say that alligators have been roaming the earth for more than 150 million years.
Despite its longevity through history, the American alligator was almost lost. It was first listed as an endangered species in 1967 due to loss of habitat and market hunting. A combined effort by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state wildlife agencies in the South and the creation of large, commercial alligator farms saved these unique animals. In 1987, the Fish and Wildlife Service pronounced the American alligator fully recovered and consequently removed the animal from the list of endangered species.
This animal is the largest reptile in North America. It can grow to be 14 feet long and up to 1,000 pounds! Come take a new look at these amazing animals and learn how our actions can affect their habitat.
The American alligator is just one of several animals to join our Georgia Aquarium family lately. Be sure to check out the leopard whiprays and bowmouth guitarfish during your visit!
