Range / Habitat

  • Lane snapper occurs in the Western Atlantic from North Carolina to southeast Brazil, including Bermuda, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. It is most abundant around the Antilles, Campeche Bank (Mexico), as well as off Panama and the north coast of South America.
  • Found over all types of bottoms, but mainly around coral reefs and on vegetated sandy areas.  
  • Has been reported at depths from about 6 to 1,312 feet (2 - 400 m) from shallow lagoons to deep outer reefs and structures, and on shrimping grounds.

Physical Characteristics

  • Lane snapper can reach a maximum size of 2 feet (60 cm) and 7.8 lbs. (3.5 kg).

Diet / Feeding

  • Feeds at night on small fishes, crabs, shrimp, worms, gastropods and cephalopods.

Reproduction / Growth

  • Lane snapper has been reported to spawn year-round.
  • Eggs hatch within about 24 hours.
  • Individuals reach sexual maturity at about 6 inches (15 cm).

Conservation Status

  • “Not Evaluated” on the IUCN Red List.

Additional Information

  • Forms large aggregations, especially during breeding season.
