Southern Sea Otter Webcam

The southern sea otter can be found off the central coast of California from San Mateo County to Santa Barbara County. Southern sea otters are considered a keystone species, helping to keep the kelp forest habitats healthy and in balance.

Facts about sea otters:

  • Sea otters have the densest fur of all mammals with anywhere between 350,000 to 1,00,000 hairs per square inch. Comparatively, dogs only have 1,000 to 60,000 hairs per square inch.
  • Sea otters must eat 20 to 25 percent of their body weight every day to help maintain a normal body temperature.
  • It is believed that sea otters will wrap themselves in kelp to keep from drifting away while they sleep.
  • Sea otters will use tools such as rocks, shells and other hard materials to break open prey items like sea urchins, snails, clams, abalone, mussels, crabs and scallops.
