We're Dedicated & Determined

GACFS participates in multiple research and conservation initiatives to assess local wildlife and environmental studies in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Working with several organizations such as Georgia Aquarium, NOAA and Florida Atlantic University, our researchers have been able to contribute important information about our local ecosystems and ocean life.

Ongoing Research Efforts

  • Ongoing Health and Environmental Risk Assessments (HERA) of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL).
  • Manatee health assessments in Florida and Georgia.
  • Annual manatee health assessment and tagging in St. Mary’s Georgia, alongside the Sea 2 Shore Alliance.
  • Annual satellite tagging efforts of Manta Rays off the coast of Northeast Florida since 2011; these tags are programmed to detach from the mantas and return recorded daily location and water temperature information back to our researchers.
  • Ongoing health assessment studies of Gulf of Mexico Atlantic bottlenose dolphins exposed to the 2010 Deep Water Horizon oil spill.
  • Beluga whale health assessments in Bristol Bay Alaska since 2012.
