Coming Soon: A New Community Effort for Atlanta’s Waterways

ATLANTA (September 24, 2026) –

The Southeast is a global hotspot for freshwater biodiversity, home to an extraordinary variety of fish, mussels, and other aquatic wildlife. Here in Georgia, streams and rivers are part of that rich freshwater landscape, connecting wildlife with the communities that depend on healthy water every day.

But the health of those waterways can be easy to overlook. Water moves through neighborhoods, parks, and business districts before continuing downstream, carrying with it the effects of what happens throughout the watershed. Atlanta also faces challenges from stormwater runoff and aging infrastructure. Yet for many people, the health of local waterways can still feel distant or difficult to understand.

To help address these gaps, Georgia Aquarium will soon be launching HydroLynk, a community-based water stewardship effort designed to connect people across Atlanta with the water around them. Through engaging educational opportunities, HydroLynk will provide meaningful ways for the community to contribute to cleaner, healthier local water quality and participate in stewardship activities.

Water stewardship is central to Georgia Aquarium’s mission and expertise. The same understanding of water quality that supports aquatic animals at the Aquarium also offers a valuable foundation for helping our region contribute to healthier waterways for our communities. HydroLynk will build on that expertise while putting community at the center.

In the months ahead, HydroLynk will begin taking shape across Atlanta, with more opportunities to learn and contribute to healthier local waterways. Stay tuned!
