Instructor-Led Program

Our engaging instructor-led programs provide focused learning opportunities where students can ask questions, collaborate and problem solve with the guidance of our Georgia Aquarium Educators.

Please see below for information and details on our Grade 1 Instructor-Led Programs:

  • 1.1 Nature’s Needs
  • 1.2 Ocean of Commotion
  • 1.3  Magnetic Marine Life

1.1 Nature’s Needs

Description:

Do all plants and animals have similar basic needs? Do those basic needs differ from animal to animal or plant to plant? How are their needs met in human care? Join us as we compare and contrast the needs of marine and freshwater habitats to the basic needs of plants and animals at Georgia Aquarium.

Georgia Standards of Excellence

  • S1L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the basic needs of plants and animals.
    • b. Ask questions to compare and contrast the basic needs of plants (air, water, light, and nutrients) and animals (air, water, food, and shelter).

Next Generation Science Standards

  • 1-LS1-1 Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.*
  • K-LS1-1. Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.

1.2 Ocean of Commotion

Description:

The ocean is alive with sounds all the time. Animals, including fish, sea turtles and crustaceans, are almost always “talking.” Sound is pertinent to these animals’ lives and the environments they inhabit. Georgia Aquarium incorporates sound in training our animals too! Join us as we uncover the lively sounds of underwater sea life here at Georgia Aquarium.

Georgia Standards of Excellence

  • S1P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to investigate light and sound.
    • d.  Construct an explanation supported by evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.

Next Generation Science Standards

  • 1-PS4-1. Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.

1.3 Magnetic Marine Life

Description:

Did you know marine animals can use the magnetic field to their advantage? Scientists are constantly discovering how marine life is using magnetic fields for survival. Join us as we dive into the world of magnets to unlock the mystery of this unique instinctive behavior with animals like sharks, sea turtles and puffins.

Georgia Standards of Excellence

  • S1P2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to demonstrate the effects of magnets on other magnets and other objects.
    • b. Plan and carry out an investigation to demonstrate how magnets attract and repel each other and the effect of magnets on common objects.

Next Generation Science Standards

  • 3-PS2-3. Ask questions to determine cause and effect relationships of electric or magnetic interactions between two objects not in contact with each other.
