Celebrating 50 Years of National Marine Sanctuaries

October 12, 2022 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Come celebrate the 50th anniversary of National Marine Sanctuaries at Georgia Aquarium! 50 years ago, the U.S. ushered in a new era of ocean conservation by creating the National Marine Sanctuary System. Since then, they’ve grown into a nationwide network of 15 national marine sanctuaries and two marine national monuments that conserve more than 620,000 square miles of spectacular ocean and Great Lakes waters. We even have one located off the coast of Georgia – Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.

In conjunction with this celebration we are debuting a new exhibit highlighting National Marine Sanctuaries and hosting a special event on Wednesday, October 12th featuring John Armor, Director of NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.

National Reptile Awareness Day

October 21, 2022 12:00am - 11:59pm

Reptiles are one of the most diverse classes of organisms on this planet. They can thrive in habitats such as deserts, forest, oceans, and ponds, but one commonality between them all is that the climate must be warm. Reptiles are cold-blooded animals, meaning they cannot regulate their own body temperature like we do. This is why you commonly see reptiles catching some rays as they bask in the sunlight. Reptiles are one of the more underappreciated animals on this planet, but the more we learn about them, the more we understand how fascinating these creatures really are!

Join us as we explore the world of reptiles, including turtles, snakes, lizards and alligators. Not only are they scaly, but they are spectacular too, with their amazing adaptations that allow them to be found on every continent, except Antarctica. We will have special, hands-on activities for guests of all ages, included with general admission.

World Jellyfish Day

November 3, 2022 12:00am - 11:59pm

Jellyfish, scientifically known as jellies, are most closely related to corals and sea anemones. However, unlike their counterparts, jellies are planktonic, meaning they drift with the ocean currents rather than attach themselves to a substrate. In fact, jellies are the largest plankton in the sea! They do not have brains, eyes, blood, or bones, so how do these magnificent creatures thrive in our oceans?

Join us as we dive into the life of a jelly, formerly known as jellyfish, and understand how this brainless, eyeless species has been around for over 500 millions years (that’s older than a dinosaur)! We will have special, hands-on activities for guests of all ages, included with general admission.
